CHELWOOD CAMP SITE

Marksbury,

Nr.  Bath

O/S landranger 172   ref 640619

Chelwood was purchased by Keynsham Scout Group in 1978 with funds gained when part of its Headquarters site was sold to the local Council for car parking.

When bought it was a "field" since when we have created the gateway and drive; built a toilet block and barn, installed water points around the site and planted 5/6000 trees.  In order to do this without substantially depleting group funds we have tried to make the site self financing.

The site nestles in a fold of the soft Avon country side covering 30 acres, almost surrounded by woodland.  There is a large camping area, screened from the road by rising ground. A stream running through a gully, offers a perfect area ideal for bivouacking.

Many kinds of wildlife abound on the site and surrounding areas, which also support a large and varied collection of trees and flora.

In the brochure you will find some very interesting Nature notes that have been put together by John Alderidge to whom we are grateful.

Facilities include a gravel roadway. leading to a car-park, next to which are the toilet blocks, water points are located around the site.  A modern barn is available as alternative wet accommodation (particularly for Cubs and Scouts).  To be shared by all campers.

The site borders the A368, 1/2 km from Chelwood village, and is easily reached via the M4/M5/M32, being no more than 30 minutes away from junction 18/19.  The busy town of Keynsham is only 8kms away, and offers all your shopping needs, plus an excellent leisure centre and swimming pool.

Bath and Bristol are both within a 20minute drive, and offer an enormous range of attractions and places of interest, to meet every taste. No more than 30km from Chelwood, you can be hiking and caving on the Mendips, meeting the sea at Weston-Super-Mare, exploring Wessex history at Glastonbury and Wells;  not to mention day trips to Bristol Zoo, the Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge, @Bristol, Longleat House and the Lions, the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, SS Great Britain - more than enough to suit any Cub, Scout or Guide.

Welcome to Chelwood, we hope you enjoy your stay.
