1st Keynsham Scout Group (Registered charity 305626)
The Scout movement celebrated its centenary in 2007 and 1st Keynsham was not far behind – our centenary was celebrated in 2009.
The group are the organisers of the Road Race and Children’s Fun Run. They provide a wide variety of interests for up to 200 youngsters in Keynsham and the immediate vicinity. Its leaders are all unpaid volunteers and spend a great deal of their available time organising not only weekly training programmes but also weekend events such as camping, canoeing, abseiling, archery, rock climbing etc. A week’s annual camp for Scouts takes place in July each year when the youngsters are encouraged to use the skills they have acquired during the previous 12 months. The group organises a traditional auction in November each year, Clay Pigeon shoots and are involved in the Keynsham Music Festival. The group has its own campsite at Chelwood, which is also used by many other Scout Groups. Two Beaver colonies for the 6 to 8 year olds provide opportunities for younger boys and girls.

There is a close association with the Explorer Unit for 14 to 18 year olds. They run independently of the Scout Group but are based at our headquarters at Mayfields, and provide valuable assistance at the Road Race and other events.

Teenage Cancer Trust (Registered Charity No. 1062559)
Teenage Cancer Trust provides specialist facilities for teenagers and young people with cancer. They have launched a £1 million fundraising appeal to help youngsters in the South West and their families by providing temporary specialist units in Bristol by spring 2010. Working with University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and the South West Specialised Commissioning Group, the charity will fund services solely for young people with cancer aged between 13 and 24. The temporary facilities will include a four bed specialist teenage cancer bay area and a ‘chill out’ room within Bristol Hospital for Children, part of University Hospitals (UH) Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. Additional entertainment equipment will also be provided to enhance other existing wards. Teenage Cancer Trust has also committed to funding an Information and IT Zone within the existing Oncology Centre at Bristol Royal Infirmary. This will include a computer booth and information for teenagers and young people with cancer and their families. The facilities will provide a temporary care solution for teenagers throughout the South West until enough money has been raised to fund a permanent specialist unit in Bristol. The charity will then go on to fund additional shared care units in hospitals across the South West.

Teenage Cancer Trust currently has 10 units around the UK, providing access to around half of all teenagers diagnosed with cancer to the dedicated, specialist support they provide. Teenage Cancer Trust’s aim is to build enough units so that, by 2012, every teenager with cancer wlll be treated on one.
