History

The Keynsham Road Race first took place in 1988 as a five and a half mile run. It has since changed to 10K but most of the course is the original with an additional loop around the Cadbury site. It is now an established event in the local athletics calendar and normally takes place on the second or third Sunday in May. It attracts quality competitive runners and also fun runners. Team prizes and spot prizes mean that anyone stands a chance of taking something home.

The race is organised by 1st Keynsham Scout Group who are one of the biggest in the area. It is one of our main fundraising events. However, it also provides the Scout Group with the opportunity to promote the work of other charities, so each year one is chosen to benefit from the event. A charity that benefits local children in some way is normally chosen as this is immediately identifiable to members of the Scout movement. Our policy is to share the money raised from runners’ sponsorship equally between the two charities.

The event has always encompassed a Children’s Fun Run that provides an opportunity for Cubs, Scouts and local schoolchildren to run, and they are encouraged to be sponsored for the chosen charities. It also provides the opportunity for Road Race runners to bring their families and encourage their children to run one, two or three miles (according to age) in a safe setting. All children who complete the Fun Run receive a medal.

1st Keynsham Scout Group is a registered charity (No. 305626).
